Amazing Message from Bishop Hermann

Bishop Hermann: 'I thought you should know’

By Bishop Robert J. Hermann, Archdiocesan Administrator

January 27, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - I was very edified this past Saturday to see the Cathedral almost filled for the Pro-Life Mass. Then to see such a large contingent, on a very cold day, make a pilgrimage to the abortion clinic, praying the Rosary for Life, was truly heartwarming.

At the very moment I am writing this, our new president, Barack Obama, is being sworn into office. We congratulate him, and we pray for him, but we cannot condone his pro-death policies, even while we are happy that so many people feel they have new hope. We must do everything we can to oppose his pro-death-to-children efforts.

Joseph Bottum, in an article entitled "Abortion after Obama," writing in the January 2009 edition of First Things, pages 13-15, tells us, "Now the 2008 election has brought us the presidency of Barack Obama, the most consistent supporter of legalized abortion ever nominated by a majority party."

When asked about making decisions as to when a baby gets human rights, President Obama answered that "is above my pay grade." He also stated that he would not want his daughters "punished with a baby."

He has made it known that, upon taking office, he will remove all federal restrictions on funding embryonic stem-cell research. He also intends to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. Seldom has our nation ever been confronted with such an extreme measure. The Freedom of Choice Act will invalidate for the entire country all restrictions on abortion before viability, including parental notification, waiting periods and partial-birth abortion bans. President Obama has no problem supporting legislation that would even kill a child who survived a botched abortion.

If at this stage our anger is directed at President Obama, our anger is misdirected. Obama is not the enemy. He needs and deserves our prayers, not our condemnation.

As Catholics, we are not guiltless. It seems to me that when President Kennedy compromised Catholic teachings and accommodated political pressures in order to be elected to the highest office in the land, he set the tone for many Catholic leaders to follow and to compromise their Catholic principles to get ahead.

In our Supreme Court and in our Congress, we have a plethora of so-called Catholics who are failing to live their Catholic identity. Over 50 percent of our electorate voted for a president who is one of the most pro-culture-of-death candidates from a major party to run for the highest office of the land.

Yes, we can thank one-half of our Catholics for bailing out on their faith!

After almost 50 years of having 50 percent of Catholics abandoning their Catholic identity, we cannot expect to turn this culture around by short-term political efforts.

In order to bring about a transformation from a culture of death to a culture of life, we have to restore our Catholic identity.

This means that all of us, as Catholics, have to undergo a profound transformation. It means that we have to take a good look at every facet of our Catholic life, including the serious study of life issues, the regular and devout use of our Sacramental system, especially the devout and weekly attendance at Mass, the regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the devout praying of the daily Rosary, and then the faithful, loving and firm witness to lax Catholics about our Catholic beliefs and practices.

We have to live our lives in such a way that we will be unafraid to witness to what we believe and live.

I may courageously say that I am willing to die to end abortion, but am I equally willing to say that I am ready to let my ego get ruffled daily for the same cause? Yet … that is where I need to arrive if I am to be a credible witness.

What a glorious opportunity we all have to make a difference in the pro-life cause. Until we are willing to be politically incorrect in order to be biblically correct, we will never convince anyone that our religion is worth living.

It does not take 100 percent of our Catholics to transform this country. If 75 percent of our Catholics were steeped in Catholic identity, the abortion issue would be over for our entire country. We have many, many evangelicals on our side in the culture of life. Look at how many more of them would flock to our side if we really lived our Catholic teachings! They, too, are looking for changeless principles lived out in practice.

But there is more! Our laxity in living our Catholic life has blinded us into not seeing the role of Satan in the culture of death. Satan is having a heyday in our midst, because he has managed to remain invisible in the culture of death, and our laxity has granted him that luxury. Since we are not steeped in the Word of God as we should be, we do not recognize his darkness in our society. Our first reading from Hebrews tells us, "The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart."

St. Paul tells us that our warfare is not against flesh and blood but against the power and principles of darkness. He also tells us that we should not let the sun go down upon our anger so as to give Satan a foothold. These readings are wake-up calls for us all. I bring this up deliberately, because I do not want us to fall into Satan's trap of getting us to hate President Obama or any of the pro-choice Catholic legislators in Congress. Being pro-life means that we engage far more in spiritual warfare than in political warfare.

That Satan is very alive in influencing all of us is his best-kept secret. Becoming steeped in the Word of God and the teachings of the Catholic Church exposes his evil machinations.

President Obama, pro-choice legislators and Planned Parenthood are not our enemies. Our enemies are the invisible forces masked behind these people. Most of them do not have a clue that they are being deceived by our common enemy, the devil. They are used by our common enemy, Satan, and his evil forces, to get us to hate so that we, too, will end up in a culture of death. President Obama and all pro-choice and pro-abortion legislators, as well as members supporting Planned Parenthood (and we have in our own state a national legislator who has received over $900,000 from groups that advocate for abortion rights) — these are not our enemies. They are used by the evil one to get us to hate them in our efforts to be pro-life and thereby ditch our pro-life efforts. We cannot fall for that trap!

We owe all of them prayers and fasting for their conversion. At one point, Gov. Reagan was California's very pro-abortion governor. Yet he became a very pro-life president. He repented and regretted the evil he supported.

We must bravely witness against supporting pro-choice and pro-abortion candidates in political elections, but pray daily for their conversion.

This is a great time to be a Catholic. This is a great time to witness to such a clear choice, the choice of Christ or the anti-Christ.

We have only one life to live, and Jesus is it!

If our focus consists only in counting votes, we will be discouraged. If our focus is on giving ourselves and our activities totally to Christ so that He can use our witnessing as He wishes, our hearts will be throbbing and radiating with life and joy.

This is a great time to wake up from our slumber of simply calling ourselves Catholic, and wage war against the forces of darkness in ourselves first and then in our culture, a culture which is resting on the premise that God does not exist.

Our actions and our lifestyles have to radiate the inner presence of Christ in the home and in the marketplace.

This is a glorious day and a glorious opportunity for any follower of Christ! We need to recover our Catholic identity, and we can do it!

"Ceremony" Clenses White House of Evil Spirits

I got this from Esthers Blog, all I can say is GOOD GRIEF!!:

I did not know what to make of this because at first I thought this was a joke. Apparently, it is not.
...On Monday, January 19th at 6:00 pm, hundreds gathered at Dupont Circle for this frivolous, yet remarkable, ceremony. A shaman was there to perform the ceremony. Rabbi Sharon Klein delivered the invocation. Together with organizer, Kate Clinton, they took on the gargantuan task of cleansing the White House of evil spirits...
Of course, there needs to be some Catholic-bashing...
Our purpose here tonight is to celebrate the end of the Bush regime with the saging of the White House”, bellowed Kate Clinton, kicking off the event before a crowd of about 2000 people.

...Just before the ceremony Clinton fired up the crowd by introducing a mock chant like Catholics do during mass. She would chant/sing distasteful parts of the Bush legacy and the crowd would sing back, “Na na naa na, na na naa na, hey hey hey. Goooobyyyye!”...

...No one is certain whether the event occurred in close enough proximity to the White House to have any effect...
Ironically, it wasn't the White House under President Bush that was possessed...

What are we coming to???

New English Mass

My Amigas and I enjoyed a super fun Moms Night Out this weekend, and boy did we talk! One subject that always comes up is the mass, concerns about it being said wrong, the differences between Latin and English...I KNEW I had read somewhere that the mass was supposed to change, to be more uniform...and I found it! Thanks to the Catholic Knight, here it is:

The Vatican recently approved a new English translation of the mass to be used in the United States. It should go into effect by 2010. The new English translation is a more faithful rendering of the original Latin text. You can download it from the USCCB by clicking here.

God Bless,

The Vatican on You Tube!

My mood has been foul to see the liberals applaud President Obama upon the unknown future of currently safely detained terrorists, the proposal to grant these people who hate us so more civil liberties while the celebration continues to fund the murder of innocent unborn babies not just here in America, but overseas as well....all funded by OUR TAX DOLLARS. I've been sickened by it, really. Save the terrorists, kill babies, yea!?

So, I was sooo happy this morning to open my email and find so many friends sharing the news that the Vatican has created it's own You Tube channel! My first word: AWESOME! Click here for the story, and go to http://www.youtube.com/vatican to check out what's happening in the Vatican daily!

We LOVE You Tube!! Wicked Awesome!!

More Free Resources!

I just added 2 new sites: EdHelper.com and Time 4 Learning. They were both sent to me with a list of 100 sites! Ei yei yei!! So, forgive me and give me time, because I have so much up already, I need to go through them one by one, and yes, now I will organize them by subject!

On another topic, do you still have your nativity scene out? Not ready to say good bye to Christmas? Well, you have some time left! Kim over at Catholic Family Vignettes gave me a lesson on The Feast of Candlemas, one I had heard of but was not too familiar with and had no idea how to celebrate. It is on February 2, so plenty of time to learn and prepare yet another beautiful tradition for the birth of Our Lord!

Enjoy!

Life, Imagine the Potential Ad

This is an Historic time, it is FIRST the day of the National March for Life, (in most places, the March for Life is TODAY, due to the events in WA DC, the National MFL is on the 22nd) and second, it is the Inaguration Day of the first mixed-race president in history, the most pro-abortion president in history. It should be a day of celebration, but I truely don't feel the urge to celebrate, I feel the urge to PRAY.

Thank you Pam in Olympia for sending me this:

"Dear CatholicVote. com Member,

According to the Financial Times, a ‘Super Bowl’ type audience is expected to tune in to coverage of the Inauguration of Barack Obama tomorrow.

To mark this occasion, we are proud to announce the release of a new commercial that will be airing all day tomorrow in select markets on Black Entertainment Television. Our newest ad is just the beginning of a year-long campaign that will include a series of commercials for use on the web and on broadcast TV.

Check out our new ad here – www.CatholicVote. org

I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so be sure to check out our new ad, and then tell your friends about it. After watching the short commercial, I hope you will appreciate our purpose. The message of CatholicVote. org is universal and transcends candidates and political parties. Even in difficult times, the truth about the dignity of every human life must be proclaimed.

We at CatholicVote. org had hoped that the first African-American president would be pro-life. Sadly, that’s not the case. While we urge you to pray earnestly for his conversion on abortion, we’re not going to waste this historic opportunity to witness to life.

Our newest ad seeks to both educate and inspire – the same elements that helped make our election season film the most-watched political ad on the Internet during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Finally, I suspect there will be a lot of talk about hope in the next couple of days. The purpose of our multiple-commercial campaign is to creatively reach new people who don’t always agree with us about the amazing gift of every human life. Simply put, abortion is the enemy of hope."

I find this so interesting that the ads are specifically targeting the African American population, but it shows where the least hope for life lies, which I find mind boggling as they have all jumped on the "Hope for Change" band wagon. Maybe President Obama will make the world such a better place people who may once would have aborted their babies, will be excited to bring their babies into it? That would be kind of funny... A decline in abortions, which his administration is promoting, perhaps because he will promise free diapers and formula to go with their free groceries and mortgage payments?

I was talking to my mom yesterday, it's an interesting point that the Liberals want to rule the world, but they are killing themselves off, and quickly too (ie EUROPE), so who will be left? The Catholics and the Mormons! You're now seeing the cynical side of Mrs. Murphy, so sorry, and I'm rambling.... Let us pray for the strayed Catholics, the Christians and Jews and Muslims, all races, to fully embrace the sanctity of new LIFE.

God Bless you in this Historic time,
Mrs. Murphy

Picky Eaters?!

I got a different resource request today, it was suggestions for picky eaters! I did some research and found some good articles about dealing with you picky eater, one is from The Mayo Clinic, it has 20 tips for picky eaters, another group of good tips is from Healthy Living Today, and another good article is from The Baby Center.

Ok, so now you've got your child psychology on picky eating in check, let's get to what you really want, ideas on what to FEED THEM! Here is are really cool site from CDKitchen with loads of kid - friendly recipes and fun ideas. Here's 10 recipes from About.com.

About.com has another article on Cooking For Kids with some more recipes, and if the problem is more sever, like a Sensory Processing Disorder, this site can help bunches, and has a whole slew of menu ideas and recipes at the bottom.

Now, a couple of basics from Mrs. Murphy are: if you have ravioli or left over spaghetti, even mac n cheese, cut it up small and mix with steamed veggies, add some extra cheese.

Another is a basic tortilla with cheese and some shredded leftover meat, toasted. My girls also love veggies with Ranch to dip, and for non-milk drinkers, go ahead and get some Strawberry Quick and make "strawberry milk", works every time!

I hope this helps some! Please send me more ideas to share if you have them!

You can also click on the little boy above to go to another good site!
Good luck!

January 18, 2009 is the National Sanctity of Human Life Day

National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 2009

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

All human life is a gift from our Creator that is sacred, unique, and worthy of protection. On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, our country recognizes that each person, including every person waiting to be born, has a special place and purpose in this world. We also underscore our dedication to heeding this message of conscience by speaking up for the weak and voiceless among us.

The most basic duty of government is to protect the life of the innocent. My Administration has been committed to building a culture of life by vigorously promoting adoption and parental notification laws, opposing Federal funding for abortions overseas, encouraging teen abstinence, and funding crisis pregnancy programs. In 2002, I was honored to sign into law the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which extends legal protection to children who survive an abortion attempt. I signed legislation in 2003 to ban the cruel practice of partial-birth abortion, and that law represents our commitment to building a culture of life in America. Also, I was proud to sign the Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004, which allows authorities to charge a person who causes death or injury to a child in the womb with a separate offense in addition to any charges relating to the mother.

America is a caring Nation, and our values should guide us as we harness the gifts of science. In our zeal for new treatments and cures, we must never abandon our fundamental morals. We can achieve the great breakthroughs we all seek with reverence for the gift of life.

The sanctity of life is written in the hearts of all men and women. On this day and throughout the year, we aspire to build a society in which every child is welcome in life and protected in law. We also encourage more of our fellow Americans to join our just and noble cause. History tells us that with a cause rooted in our deepest principles and appealing to the best instincts of our citizens, we will prevail.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 18, 2009, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize this day with appropriate ceremonies and to underscore our commitment to respecting and protecting the life and dignity of every human being.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

Krispy Kreme Celebrates Obama with Free “Freedom of Choice” Donuts

Commentary by Judie Brown

Washington, DC, January 15 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The next time you stare down a conveyor belt of slow-moving, hot, sugary glazed donuts at your local Krispy Kreme you just might be supporting President-elect Barack Obama's radical support for abortion on demand – including his sweeping promise to sign the Freedom of Choice Act as soon as he steps in the Oval Office, Jan. 20.

The doughnut giant released the following statement yesterday:

“Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.”

Just an unfortunate choice of words? For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so. The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that "choice" is synonymous with abortion access and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand.

President-elect Barack Obama promises to be the most virulently pro-abortion president in history. Millions more children will be endangered by his radical abortion agenda.

Celebrating his inauguration with "Freedom of Choice" doughnuts – only two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion – is not only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of a national tragedy.

A misconstrued concept of "choice" has killed over 50 million preborn children since Jan. 22, 1973. Does Krispy Kreme really want their free doughnuts to celebrate this "freedom"?

As of Thursday morning, Krispy Kreme Communications Director Brian Little could not be reached for comment. We challenge Krispy Kreme doughnuts to reaffirm their commitment to true freedom – to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – and to separate themselves and their doughnuts from our great American shame.

To express concern to Krisy Kreme:
http://www.krispykreme.com/contact.asp

There is NOTHING we cannot sacrifice for the UNBORN, plus, dropping the doughnuts is probably a good idea for all, right!?

Happy Dunkin'!!

Free Martin Luther King Lapbooks

Yikes, the time is flying by! My friend "reminded" me that Martin Luther King day was just around the corner! I was selfishly planning the exodus of junk from our garage for Friday.

I found a few good resources for free Lapbooks, this link will take you to a pdf file, here is another demonstrated by Woodstone Prairie, and another from Just Call Me Jammin.

Start your Novena to Fight FOCA TODAY!

For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) [also know as freedom to kill act] is set to be signed if congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The FOCA is the next sad chapter in the book of abortion. If made a law, virtually all limitations on abortion will be lifted, which will result in the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals would be required to perform abortions upon request. If this were to happen, some U.S. Bishops have indicated they would consider closing down Catholic hospitals rather than perform abortions - more than 30% of all hospitals in the United States are Catholic.

2)
Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.
3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.
4) Parental notification will no longer be required.
5) The
number of abortions could increase by as much as 100,000 annually.

Perhaps most importantly the government would then have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (
down syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children a woman is allowed to have.

Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As
Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.

The Plan :

To say a novena (
nine days of prayer ) along with fasting, starting on Sunday, January 11th.
For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non Catholics, I would ask that you pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for 9 consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast. Just do three things:

1) Forward this letter on to five or more people
2) Do it in three days or less
3) Start the novena on January 11th and pray for nine consecutive days.

(Please also fast for at least two days during the novena
)

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the killing of defenseless children then the time is now to do something about it!

Lord, may everything we do begin with Your inspiration and continue with Your help, so that all our prayers and works may begin in You and by You be happily ended.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Pray for the unborn,
Mrs. Murphy

Pelagianism

I have to admit that this attitude has filtered through me from time to time over the years, it's just so easy. I know many people who subscribe to this "If I'm just a good person, it's all ok" attitude. But, I didn't know it had a name! This article sent to me from Marti in Olympia is fascinating. I hope you all enjoy it!

deconstructing a heresy:
Pelagianism: I hate it, but it is very British. It is really a variant of Arianism which says God did not truly become Man, because Jesus was not truly God. Pelagianism denies the action of Grace in the world; man is saved by his own goodness and efforts, rather than by God. It is what we do, rather than what God does that matters, therefore the value of the sacraments is the psychological effect they have in our lives, rather than the direct intervention of God. It denies the power of Grace, of the role of the Blessed Virgin, of miracles, of the power of prayer: Pelagians above all would deny the role of the Holy Spirit, of His act of sanctification. Wherever there is attempt to place man at the heart of the faith, there we should expect to find Pelagianism. Pelagianism expects Man to be strong rather God’s grace to be powerful. Catholicism, or as we could call it, mainstream Christianity, acknowledges mankind is weak and wholly dependent on those things God gives him.

Signs of the Pelagian: The Church is a human construct and there is nothing or little of Grace about it. The Liturgy and prayer is about how it makes us feel. Feelings rather than Grace are important. Revelation is not a given, something given for today and all time, but something of that past that depends on our interpretation. Ultimately, Pelagianism says God is irrelevant to society and to the individual. Pelagians tend to have a poor view of mankind, what you see is what you get, because there is no room for Grace. It is also elitist, insofar as it values a human being by his goodness, his talents, his skills, his willpower.

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin is the destroyer of Pelagianism. Her whole being was about saying yes to Grace. Being the Mather of God she became the source of Grace. Her life shows the effects and power of Grace.
Fr. Ray Blake
(I will add to Fr. Blake’s observations two other marks of the Pelagian: their penchant for defending the lame-duck ICEL translations and a resistance to the norms of Liturgiam authenticam. --Fr. Z)

Here is more from Fr. Z and again it shows why we must pray for more faithful translations.

ICEL (1973 translation of the 1970MR):
God our Father,
may we always profit by the prayers
of the Virgin Mother Mary,
for you bring us life and salvation
through Jesus Christ her Son…

LITERAL TRANSLATION:
O God, who by the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary
bestowed upon the human race the rewards of eternal salvation,
grant, we beg, that we may perceive her interceding for us,
through whom we merited to receive Your Son, the author of life.
-----------
COLLECT (1962MR):
Deus, qui salutis aeternae, beatae Mariae virginitate fecunda,
humano generi praemia praestitisti:
tribue, quaesumus; ut ipsam pro nobis intercedere sentiamus,
per quam meruimus auctorem vitae suscipere.

I Love Tea! Oh, AND FREE RESOURCES!!

This is the beautiful tea-pot my husband gave me for Christmas. I love it! I was so excited to read that January is National Hot Tea Month! I cannot tolerate coffee with this pregnancy, so I am back to one to two cups of tea a morning. Thanks for sharing Kim!

Some new resources have arrived! Senari Academy has a whole slew of FREE games and activities. Bingo games for the month are Rhode Island, Maryland, Louisiana, California, Nevada and State Outlines.

Language Arts games will be ongoing for the next few months. Color-Coding and diagramming as proved a great tool both for the classroom and homeschoolers since it provides a visual way for students to learn grammar and thought patterns in English.

January features the Sentence Board, a reference tool, practice lessons and manipulatives for the Noun-Verb Pattern. The lessons and manipulative integrate Catholic/Christian sentences, and they are in Word format so you can enter your own sentences if you wish.

Catholic games include Saints and Feast Days bingo for January and February, and matching games for the Baltimore Catechism – Lessons 3, 4, 5, and 6.and some video tutorials and power point presentations on the slope and equation of a line, Make it Math, Using Study Units, Phonics and Spelling, and a Mountain Ranges worksheet.

Thank You Mrs. O'C!

From Marti in Olympia, thanks for all the handwriting resources! One even has animated instruction! Check them all out in my homeschool resource section on the right side of my blog. I'm loving the resources, and loving browsing them even more with a hot cup of tea!

Thanks ladies, keep it coming!
Mrs. Murphy

Another addition! The Kids Know it Network is awesome! It has all kinds of FREE stuff on: animals, astronomy, biology, chemistry, dinosaurs, geography, geology, history, human biology, math, memory and spelling - WOW! Thanks Ruthanna from CVA!

Always Learning...

I am a convert, not a cradle Catholic, but either group can claim ignorance of the Liturgical traditions for this reason alone. I just learned that the Church listed Epiphany on Sunday, January 4, while it is also still celebrated on January 6, which is the actual 12th day of Christmas. (If I wasn't immediately dumb upon getting pregnant, I could have done that math!)

My good friend Michaela always amazes me with her commitment to preparing for and carrying out such beautiful and memory filled liturgical celebrations. She is an inspiration, and I am just going to have to steal all her good ideas!

So, I am creating a "Christmas Season for Catholic Dummies, aka Mrs. Murphy Binder" to keep, and will continue to build more for each season. See, my problem is I get with my friends or check out the blogs about the liturgical celebrations and feast days like, the day before or the day of.... that is no time for me to even mentally prepare!

I'm thinking my Christmas Binder will begin the day after Thanksgiving, with a list of shopping items for each traditional food, craft, etc needed to carry out that holiday season, and end on Epiphany, or the 12th day of Christmas. I will have the day listed, such as St. Nicholas Day, a description of what it is all about, 2 or 3 ideas for a craft, 2 or 3 food ideas to make with the kids, and how to carry out this day, so I have it all laid out ahead of time. The idea came to me as I was feeling quite upset with myself that I didn't do more, when Dora the Explorer, Diego and Boots were on an adventure to a 3 Kings party. Cute, no doubt! But I want these memories to stem from the HOME, not Nickelodeon!

I certainly cannot do every feast day, every Saint day, it's just not possible in the Murphy house, so I will start out with the basics and build. This year for sure, we will be going through and creating memorable Namesake Feast days, something I have never done before. My friends Poms, Michaela and 5-0 will be recruited to help me! So, whether Cradle or Convert, there is always room to grow and learn, I will share this binder making system with you as I go along, and PLEASE, send me some ideas!

Happy Epiphany!

Well, a late mass and a much needed nap for me....no major Epiphany celebration happening in the Murphy home! The kids know what the day is about, and the wise men have moved around the home to the baby Jesus, and for a sweet treat my eldest graciously made cakes for all (minus mom) in her Easy Bake Oven. For dinner? Leftovers soup! So easy, and it's SO COLD here, perfect with some biscuits tonight, plus I need room for the leftover New Year's ham!

But, I did remember this recipe for my Hawaii days with the Military Council of Catholic Women for a super yummy and fun Epiphany Cake:

ROSCA DE REYES

Whoever discovers a little sugar Jesus or a bean in his "rosca de reyes," or king's crown, has to organize and pay for the Candlemas party on February 2, when all the guests will be invited to pray the rosary and eat tamales. It is whispered that anyone who is a bit stingy won't hesitate to swallow the baby, but since the party takes place with family and friends, the subterfuge is quickly pointed out with laughs and good-natured taunts.

Sweet Dough

3 eggs (room temperature) 5 cups all- purpose flour

1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 stick butter 2 packages dry yeast

1 cup milk 1/4 cup warm water (105 degrees)

Egg Wash

Beat together one egg and one tablespoon of water.

PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES

1. Sprinkle yeast in warm water. Mix. Let soften. Stir, then let sit about 5 minutes, until light and bubbly.

2. Scald milk. Remove from stove. Melt butter in warm mild.

3. In large bowl beat eggs.

4. Add sugar, salt and dissolved yeast to eggs.

5. Add milk mixture. Beat well.

6. Stir in flour. Beat well. Dough will be soft.

7. Place dough into large buttered bowl. Cover with a towel, put in a draft-free place and let rise until double in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.

8. Turn dough out on floured board and knead 10-12 times.

9. Roll dough out to 24 x 10-inches.

10. Brush with melted butter.

11. Top with filling.

12. Roll dough with filling like a jelly roll. The roll should be 24 inches long.

13. Seal edges with egg wash.

14. Place on a large greased cookie sheet.

15. Push baby into Kings’ Cake.

16. Pressing ends together seal.

17. Brush Kings’ Cake with egg wash.

18. Cover with a towel, put in warm place to rise until double in size - 45 minutes.

19. Bake in the middle of preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.

20. Remove from oven and cool.

21. Top with frosting.

22. Sprinkle with colored sugar over top of cake

Ring in 2009

New Years Shmew Years, I hate New Years. Well, that's not completely true, actually the best thing that ever happened to me happened on New Years Eve; it was the night I met my husband 14 years ago. What annoys me about this "holiday" is the hype about resolutions. It's advertised and promoted that this is the time to make changes, to better yourself, improve your health, your finances, lose weight.... well it's not, or at least it's not the only or ideal time.

Mrs. Murphy doesn't mess around, I'm going to give it to you straight, you can change any situation any day of the year. What it takes is desire, motivation and prayer. Make a plan, write it out, keep it posted on your cork board or you fridge. Have a buddy, put it on the schedule, keep a routine. There, I've laid it out, all the tools you need. So don't wait until New Year's Eve to "start", do it now, today, any day. Know you have the strength of Our Lord, of God, of Mary and St. Joseph and all the Angels and Saints on your side to help and guide you when you need it. Go for it, whatever it is!

God Bless,
Mrs. Murphy
